Hola, fellow BAMmers and all other friends,
Lo, over the horizon of the centuries, approacheth that which we have
long awaited and now face, well, without any special beer. The roundest numbered year that
any of us are likely to see deserves a special commemoration, a singular event
comtemplated
solely with the intent to usher in the new era, a chance to make something truely grand
which can stand up to the gravity of the event and last well into the coming millenium.
With this in mind, please join us for the first, the only, and the last...
BAY AREA MASHERS MILLENIAL BARLEYWINE BREW-OFF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes folks, this is one event that we will not be repeating (unless the club is still
around
in 3000). This will be our chance to get together and brew BIG beers to commemorate the
millenium, the only kind of beer massive enough enough to stand up to the inexorable march
of time expressed by the number 2000. And if you want to make one and have it ready in
time,
the time to start is ASAP.
So without any further ado, here is the skinny:
THE DATE: Saturday, January 23rd
(the off week in the playoffs, for you shameless football junkies)
THE PLACE: Oak Barrel
THE TIME: 10:00 am, Oak Barrel's opening time.
WHAT TO BRING:
GENRAL STUFF: Food and drink fitting to the occasion. I will try to swing having a BBQ
present so we can cook out.
BREWING STUFF: Bring as much malt as you can shoehorn into your mash tun, and hops to
match
it. Bring all your brewing equipment.
Get your yeast started well in advance - you want to pitch like crazy for this one. It
takes
a lot of metabolizing for yeast to eat their way through a barleywine, they may not do it
properly unless you give a BIG dose of yeast.
This event will be a lot of fun. We have all been talking about staging some group brews
in
the last year, and I think that this would be a great way to kick off a year of team
brewing. And you know that you don't want to see the new millenium in without having made
something unquestionably special for it. So this is the day to do it.
CREDITS: A thousand thanks to Andy Schonwetter, whose idea this was.
A thousand thanks to Bernie, Homer, and George, for agreeing to host us.
A thousand thanks, in advance, to you, for making this event a real party of a brew, and a
special day that we will remember for years to come.
Thanks,
Lee Shephard,
President, Bay Area Mashers.
